Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

Under direct supervision of the Head Start Director, coordinates, implements, and accesses services for children with disabilities enrolled in Head Start.  Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.

NATURE OF WORK

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Supervises Head Start Teachers and Teacher Assistants.
  • Supervises the implementation of planned activities in accordance with the Head Start strategic plan and performance standards.
  • Updates annually the education component plan in coordination with the Policy Council, parents, and Head Start staff.
  • Assists in the development of an education program based on the identified community needs.
  • Assists teaching staff in implementing parent involvement in the education program.
  • Monitors lesson planning and individual student learning plan.
  • Assists teachers in identifying needs for classroom supplies and materials.
  • Meets regularly with coordinators to share information and coordinate efforts to implement performance standards

and strategic plan.

  • Ensures confidential maintenance of all participant files, including data regarding each child’s assessments, educational programs, and progress.
  • Coordinates developmental screenings and provides results to teachers.
  • Observes and monitors children and therapists during class activities, while on the playground, and during field trips.
  • Refers children who are suspected of having developmental delays in learning.
  • Communicates with the special education program regarding children who are served with an IEP.
  • Provides transition support and activities to the schools into which the children are transitioning.
  • Provides support and training to parents and staff regarding disabilities.
  • Teaches self-sufficiency to children with disabilities through physical exercises for body development; designs appropriate activity programs to meet the needs of each child; incorporates individualized education plans into daily activities and lesson plans.
  • Provides classroom assistance as requested.
  • Meets regularly with coordinators to share information and coordinate efforts to implement performance standards

and strategic plan.

  • Attends Monthly parent Meetings, occasional week-end activities, evening parent/child activities.
  • Promotes active parent involvement in the Head Start program.
  • Conducts home visits with families in coordination with other program staff for purposes of assessment, support, and sharing information on parenting, educational strategies, and classroom progress.
  • Assists with Child Find activities, eligibility, and enrollment efforts.
  • Assists program director in developing a program budget that is designed to implement program goals and objectives

for the classroom.

  • Generates, submits, and presents reports to Coordinator regarding training; concerns; general progress of disabilities component; and other pertinent information.
  • Improves staff effectiveness by coaching, counseling, training and recommending disciplinary action for employees; and planning, delegating, monitoring, and appraising job tasks and results in a timely manner.
  • Hosts regular staff meetings to ensure communication among personnel regarding program-related activities.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; and conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.
  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.
  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Skill in preparing reports and correspondence.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR.
  • Possession of Food Handler’s Certificate.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

Bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, or related field plus three years’ experience in Early Childhood Education and one year experience working with children with disabilities, preferably at the pre-school level; experience working with parents of young children preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Current valid New Mexico Driver’s License.  Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.  Must be willing to sign a confidentiality statement upon hire.

 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.  The employee occasionally is required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and taste or smell.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

 

Work is generally performed in an office or classroom setting with a moderate noise level.  Evening, weekend, and/or holiday work may be required.  Travel is required for training, meetings, conferences, presentations, and other events.
