OUR HISTORY

Ohkay Owingeh – Place of the Strong People – is a nation that has survived and endured since time immemorial. Ohkay Owingeh is a Tewa-speaking village located at the confluences of the Rio Grande and Chama rivers. Agriculture, hunting, and subsistence have been at the core of our traditional value systems. Nearby petroglyphs date back at least 10,000 years where our ancestors carved depictions of migrations and stories. Pueblo people have endured the political regimes of Spain, Mexico, and the United States. We are a strong community of veterans who have served in the armed forces. Today, we are proud of our thriving children and families who continue our traditional practices and customs. Ohkay Owingeh history has always been a process of events and stories. Our history is one that connects the past with the future well-being of our people. Ohkay Owingeh is eager to continue building tribal capacity by creating the infrastructure and economic needs for generations ahead.
