Ohkay Owingeh Veterans and Families Program


The Ohkay Owingeh Veterans and Families Program is a program designed to assist all Veterans and Family members of Veterans with any and all issues related VA Healthcare, VA Benefits, VA Housing, and VA Cemetery issues.

Currently, the Ohkay Owingeh Veterans and Families Program is managed by Michael Montoya who was appointed by the Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Council through Council Resolution in May of 2015.

Mission Statement

The mission and obligation of the Ohkay Owingeh Veterans and Families Program is to promote Respect, Excellence, Advocacy, and Commitment for all Native American and Non-Native American Veterans and their families. To increase public recognition and develop core values that define us as a unique and proud people. To respectfully reward all those who have served with honor and courage to keep us and our country safe. And to continuously develop programs to reach out to our veterans, military service members, and their families that will reflect their needs and concerns.

SERVICES Provided

    • VA Benefits which consist of; Medical Benefits, Disability Compensation, Pension, Death Pension, Dependency and Indemnity Compensation, Burial Benefits, Appeals, and VA Home Loans
    • Traditional Burial Benefits
    • Interment Flag provider
    • Obtaining Military Headstones
    • Posting small US flags on Memorial Day
    • Veterans Transport Services to VA appointments
    • Tewa Language Interpretation
    • Veterans, Families and Community Involvement, the Veterans and Families have meetings twice a month, the 1st (first) and 3rd (third) Thursday of each month held at the Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Council Chambers at 6:00 pm, all Veterans and Families are encouraged to attend
    • Recognition and Honoring Ceremonies; Veterans (living and deceased) are recognized and honored, as well as Family Members who actively participate and serve the Veterans and Families Program
    • Veterans and Families Program continues to plan for upcoming events such as;
    • 1. Memorial Day Celebration, to be held Memorial Weekend

      2. Veterans Day Event, to be held November 11th

      3. Veterans and Families Conferences,

      4. Thanksgiving Day Food Drives (Elderly)

      5. Christmas Gift Giving to (Students)

      6. Involvement with Blue Star Mothers

      7. Data collection and Photo for National Native American Memorial in Washington D.C.

Type Of Services

  • The Ohkay Owingeh Honor Guard Program has been a program in the making for the past year. The members of the program are made up of honorably discharged Veterans and Family members who willing to dedicate their time to Family’s, Community, other Tribes and Organizations that request for services. The Honor Guard program is registered through the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services and has gone through the State Honor Guard training. Services consist of the following;
  • Posting Colors and retiring colors for Special Events
  • Full Military Honors for Fallen Comrades, which consist of; flag folding taps and Gun salute
  • Community Involvement
