Job Description

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

 

Accomplishes the school’s objectives by assisting teachers in planning and implementing educational and classroom programs and experiences to enhance and promote the educational, intellectual, and social growth and development of children.  Maintains a safe environment.

NATURE OF WORK

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

 

  • Organizes materials and supplies required for daily use in educational activities.
  • Assist licensed personnel/Teacher in the school environment including special education, early childhood and Tewa classrooms/settings
  • Assists Teacher in providing and supervising a variety of experiences by means of dramatic play, storytelling, field

trips, and group discussion to stimulate students’ interest in and broaden understanding of their physical and social environment.

  • Aids the Teacher and works with small and large group instruction.
  • Encourages children to communicate; encourages children to take pride in their cultural heritage.
  • Accompanies and transports children on field trips or to activities.
  • Attends staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Assists in maintaining confidential records.
  • Works cooperatively with other school personnel, parents, and other community members.
  • Maintains a safe, orderly, attractive, and stimulating physical environment for children; ensures safety of children

by maintaining clear exit for evacuations.

  • Participates in parent meetings and individual conferences as directed.
  • Operates and cares for equipment used in the classroom for instructional purposes.
  • Collects, prepares and arranges resource material for use by the Teacher.
  • Assists Teachers in implementing established classroom rules and routines and ensuring that they are understood

and accepted by children and their parents.

  • Maintains classroom records, prepares reports as requested by the classroom teacher or principal, scores tests,

processes books, manages supplies and classroom equipment.

  • Provides support for non-instructional classroom duties such as monitoring snacks, restroom, clothing areas, etc.
  • Trains and assists students in self-help skills including eating, toileting, hygiene, behavior management and

academic skills.

  • Complies with state approved Code of Ethics of the Education Profession and upholds and enforces rules,

administrative directives and regulations, School Board policies and local, state and federal regulations.

  • Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
  • Performs other duties as required.

 

 

 

 

JOB FUNCTION

  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and pueblo customs and traditions.
  • Knowledge of the functions and structure of Ohkay Owingeh.
  • Knowledge of social, physical, and mental development of elementary school children.
  • Skill in classroom management.
  • Skill in directing the activities of groups of children; evaluating progress and maintaining an orderly classroom.
  • Skill in administering disciplinary rules to children and resolving situational conflicts among children.
  • Skill in cross cultural education.
  • Ability to make solid decisions and exercise independent judgment.
  • Ability to interact and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict timelines.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals and demonstrate leadership and team-building skills with empathy and enthusiasm.
  • Ability to supervise and ensure a safe learning environment for young children.
  • Ability to demonstrate moral character, honesty, tact, fairness, lack of prejudice, and desire to help when dealing with people.
  • Certified in First Aid and CPR within 90 days of employment.
  • Oneida certification on reporting Child Abuse and Neglect within 90 days of employment.

 

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

 

Associate’s degree or 48 credit of college coursework; or equivalent required plus experience in a children’s teaching environment preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license and successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen, and background investigation.

 

 

 

Work Environment:

Work is generally performed in a classroom setting with a moderate noise level.
